The Bureau of Queer Art | InResidency Hybrid Artist Residency

InResidency

A Low-Residency Artist Program by The Bureau of Queer Art
Where flexibility meets visibility, and community transforms your practice.

Queer. Allied. Global. Rooted.

InResidency is a low-residency artist program designed for working artists, artists with complex schedules, and those who need flexibility without sacrificing outcomes.

This is more than a residency. It’s a creative ecosystem where queer and allied artists build sustainable practices, receive curatorial support, and amplify their voice across borders.

Cuernavaca Studio Access (Low-Residency Track)

We now offer optional low-residency participation in Cuernavaca, MX. Artists can access a private working studio for research, development, and exhibition.

What’s included:

  • Studio space with flexible duration and low-cost access for current residents

  • Artist-led outcomes: open studio event, solo exhibition, or TBQA-hosted showcase in the same space or other regional space as available.

  • Inclusion in Artsy + TBQA publication campaigns

  • Artist-guided schedule (arrive for a few days, weeks, or plan a hybrid stay during your online residency)

  • Collaborative support to locate nearby accommodations (Airbnb-style, walkable and affordable—artist pays separately)

This model allows artists to physically root their work while preserving their autonomy. You come for the studio, stay for the visibility.

Who It’s For

  • Artists who need flexibility—working professionals, parents, caregivers, those balancing other responsibilities.

  • Artists seeking international visibility without the cost or constraint of relocating.

  • Artists who crave community and critique, without the gatekeeping of traditional institutions.

  • Artists at any career stage who are ready to grow—together.

Apply Anytime

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Artists may enter the residency as space becomes available.
We’ll review your submission and respond within 30 days.

  • This question comes up often—from artists inside and outside the LGBTQIA+ community. It reflects the pressure so many of us feel to define ourselves in ways that conform to dominant narratives, aesthetics, or expectations.

At The Bureau of Queer Art, we believe: You don’t need to prove your Queerness to belong here.

Queer isn’t one look, one legacy, or one way of being. It’s not about how loud your expression is, or whether your work fits a mold. For some, Queerness is visible and defiant. For others, it’s quiet, reflective, or still evolving. And for our allied artists, it’s a conscious choice to stand beside us—to advocate, support, and create a more just art world.

We created TBQA as a refuge—a place where artists across the gender and sexuality spectrum, at every career stage, can grow, be seen, and be supported. We resist the gatekeeping of galleries and algorithms. We welcome the full range of Queer and allied voices. If being part of this community opens doors for you—artistically, emotionally, or professionally—that’s more than enough.

Here, you don’t need to pass a test to be seen. You just need to show up as yourself.

Because visibility shouldn’t be conditional. And community shouldn’t be exclusive.

  • Artists applying for residency meet weekly over a set period to collaboratively address critical issues that influence their creative and professional growth, fostering an interdisciplinary dialogue.

We are excited to announce that our residency program is even more accessible than ever! Artists can join us at any time for a transformative 10-week experience, depending on available seats. This change allows for increased flexibility and opportunity, fostering a dynamic and diverse creative environment. We encourage artists of all backgrounds and disciplines to take advantage of this opening. Come ignite your creativity and collaborate with a vibrant community of queer and allied artists. Apply today to secure your spot!

Our artist residency program, passionately dedicated to queer and queer-allied artists, is eagerly preparing for a momentous occasion: our participation in the 6th Annual Summer Pride show. This year's residency is especially designed to culminate in an expressive and impactful exhibition, celebrating the themes and essence of Pride. We warmly invite artists who identify as queer or are allies of the queer community to join us in this creative endeavor.

    • Residency Tuition: 5,500 MXN (approx. $320 USD)
Includes 10 consecutive sessions over ~12 weeks.
(U.S. holidays and exhibition prep weeks are excluded.)

    • Studio Access (Low-Residency Track):
Discounted access for current residents. Fees based on usage and exhibition support needs.

    • Solo Show on Artsy:
      $25 USD for residents / $75 USD for non-residents.

  • Our model centers equity and access for queer and allied artists across the diaspora. Residency fees support real visibility, artist-first outcomes, and shared infrastructure.

You don’t need to prove your queerness, your value, or your worth. You just need to show up with your work, and we’ll meet you with care, critique, and community.

  • At The Bureau of Queer Art, we believe artists thrive when their work is seen, their voices are heard, and their contributions are valued. Our residency program is built to support the full scope of your practice—connecting you with visibility, curatorial support, and a global community of queer and allied artists.

These benefits are offered to reduce financial barriers, amplify your reach, and reinforce your place in the broader cultural conversation.

Residency pricing + new benefits for 2025

These updates reflect a commitment to accessibility while sustaining the infrastructure and visibility this residency makes possible.

Residency Tuition is Now 5,500 MXN
Reduced from 11,000 MXN, the new 10-week tuition reflects our belief that cost should not be a barrier to access, especially for queer and allied artists across the Global South. You do not have to join on set calendar dates, but can do 10 consecutive sessions, leave, rejoin, or continue as it benefits your studio. Note: we have blocked dates for breaks, exhibition prep and launch, and national holidays, which are not counted in the 10 weeks.

Group Exhibition on Artsy.net — Still Free for Residents
All residency artists are included in our internationally visible group shows on Artsy.net, with no added fees. These shows remain a foundational part of TBQA’s mission to elevate queer contemporary art.

Solo Exhibition Opportunities — Now with Reduced Fee
Residents may be invited for a 60-day solo show on Artsy.net. To help support platform and promotional costs, residency artists now pay $25 USD if selected.

Non-residency artists continue to pay the standard $75 USD participation fee.

Feature in The Bureau of Queer Art Magazine — Now on Substack
Our publishing model has shifted to Substack, where our readership has grown from 100 downloads to over 2,000 weekly views. This change increases artist visibility and builds meaningful SEO for your name and practice.

Each artist in the group exhibition will receive a 2-page artist profile. Expanded features—including interviews and podcast episodes—will be curated based on what’s new, evolving, and urgent in your practice. Rather than repeating past content for every exhibition, we’ll focus on helping our audience and collectors understand what’s most alive in your work now.

     Curatorial Mentorship & Professional Guidance
You’ll continue to receive individualized feedback on your artist statements, bios, CVs, project development, and conceptual framing. This remains one of the core benefits of participating.

     Private Session Replays (YouTube)
We’re phasing out Patreon and replacing it with a private YouTube channel to house session recordings—so you can access residency content on your own time, from your phone, without added fees.

     Updated Commission Structure for Sales
To maintain accessibility while continuing to support Artsy programming and publication, we’ve adjusted the commission breakdown.
Previously, artists received 60% of each sale. The new structure is:

    • 55% to the Artist

    • 26% to The Bureau of Queer Art

    • 19% to Artsy

This shift helps balance the reduced tuition with the real costs of sustaining international visibility and shared infrastructure, while continuing to prioritize the artist’s share.

We don’t just believe in your art—we invest in your visibility, your growth, and your right to belong.
Apply to join a community where who you are is enough, and where your art is given the platform it deserves.
